Economic Growth Strategy 2025-2030

Exciting times are ahead for Huntingdonshire as our updated Economic Growth Strategy (EGS) is now live. This refreshed strategy sets out a clear vision and action plan for the future, aligning with local, regional, and national priorities.

Informed by the latest data and insights, the strategy builds on our district's key strengths—such as our vibrant small business community, strategic location, and high quality of life—while also addressing challenges like town centre connectivity and access to opportunities. To drive sustainable growth, the EGS focuses on what's working well and takes targeted action to tackle the areas where support is most needed.

Financial Investment

HDC utilised UKSPF and CPCA funding to support district businesses through initiatives like the Shop Front Grant Scheme, approving 46 applications across Huntingdon, St Ives, Ramsey, and St Neots, totalling £175,550. The scheme has positively impacted high streets, with ongoing work on remaining projects. The Rural England Prosperity Fund has further supported 11 local enterprises, including 5 farms, 2 micro-breweries, and 4 diverse businesses, strengthening the rural economy and community resilience.

Market Towns

Key projects are moving forward across all towns. Digital Information Screens will soon be installed to assist visitors and promote local heritage. In Huntingdon, the Cromwell Museum expansion is underway, transforming an empty unit into an enhanced museum experience, benefiting residents, tourists, and the local economy. St Ives' Broadway public realm improvements are complete, and funding is supporting renovations at the Memorial Pavilion in Warner's Park. Ramsey's Great Whyte public realm proposals are being updated, with a "Shop in Box" provision informed by business support feedback. In St Neots, market square works are wrapping up, while redevelopment of the Priory Centre and Old Falcon is beginning, bringing long-awaited improvements to the town.

Call for sites and the Local Plan Update

In 2023, the Council launched a Call for Sites, inviting proposals for potential allocations in the next Local Plan, covering housing, employment, renewable energy, and biodiversity. Submitted sites were assessed through a Land Availability Assessment and Sustainability Appraisal, identifying those with potential. Final allocations will depend on factors like growth strategy and evidence-based studies.

A consultation on the assessments ran from 18 Sept to 27 Nov 2024, with a second round from 23 April to 4 June 2025 for additional sites. This feedback, along with further evidence (transport studies, climate reports, etc.), will inform the draft Local Plan ('Preferred Options Local Plan'), expected for consultation in Autumn/Winter 2025.

Pride in Place

The "Pride in Place" event, hosted by Huntingdonshire District Council, showcased the district's potential as a prime location for investment and growth. The event brought together local businesses, stakeholders, and council representatives to discuss opportunities for economic development and highlight key projects across Huntingdonshire. This event emphasised the council's dedication to creating a prosperous future for Huntingdonshire.

Place Strategy

The Huntingdonshire Futures Place Strategy outlines a vision for sustainable growth and vibrant communities over the next 30 years. With a focus on eco-friendly and community-driven projects, it offers strong investment opportunities for developers. Key initiatives include enhancing green spaces and achieving net-zero emissions by 2040. Developers aligning with these goals can contribute to long-term environmental and social benefits while tapping into emerging markets for sustainable development.
